Viet Nam fine art museum is one of the fine colonial mansion that is an oriental-style roof and a residence. Although, the effect is pleasing, the various collections are eclectic – inevitably, the Soviet inspired social realism school is well represented but is by no means dominant.
The museum has a more or less chronological exhibition of Vietnamese art with different themes and techniques going back to pre-history until present.
Among the many reproductions, there are some fine originals. Particularly noteworthy are a delightful collection of folk art, and a good range of modern art including some excellent water colors and innovative contemporary work. Vietnam Fine Arts Museum also has a ceramics section in the basement that is easily missed. The shop is just outside the 2nd floor of the main building.
